How Long Did Your Starter and/or Alternator Last?

As the years and miles tick by I'm starting to wonder what to expect for service life on my starter and alternator. No hint of any problems at 15 years and 115K miles. So, if/when did your parts go bad? Also, if it was an alternator, was it due to oil damage that is often talked about?

No issues with either for me. approaching 250k. With the oil leak, it's best to monitor the spool valve (if your van has one) and fix it before it kills the alternator.

We did have someone in the past 3 odd months report that they changed their alternator "pre-emptively". They then listed it for sale on here too if I am not mistaken.

Still on the factory starter and alternator at 109k and 16+ years. Zero signs of trouble from either.

Good practices with the battery can also help prolong the life of the alternator (don't use the alternator to charge up a dead battery, that sort of thing)

I have the original starter on my '07, so 16 years and 101K miles.

Alternator was replaced by the previous owner at about 12 years and 75-80K miles. The previous owner drove very little, mostly local mileage, and I suspect he often over-taxed the alternator by letting it charge a depleted battery due to the car sitting.

As evidenced by the responses in this thread, the starters generally last longer than the alternators.

I'm not sure which one I'd rather have to replace to be honest. The alternator is somewhat of a challenge in terms of space in that area and getting the serpentine belt off, while the starter has its own challenges with getting the battery tray out.

At about 150k-160k my alt overheated and shut down, causing a charging system warning. After sitting for an hour I was able to continue driving it for the next 3 weeks, charging system light still illuminated, with with the alternator charging properly the whole rest of the time. I did replace it after those 3 weeks however.

05 with 209k, starter went at about 175k and the alternator was replaced about 3 months ago. I think the alternator might have been a loose cable issue honestly but I replaced it anyway due to age.
Starter replacement was fairly easy since I have done them a few times on other Odysseys I have owned. The alternator turned into a bit of a challenge after I sheared the tensioner bolt head off. Once I had a new tensioner in hand just cut the belt off and rest only took about 30 minutes.

'08 LX with 220K. Original starter OEM alternator replaced at 120K (Advance Auto lifetime warranty). Just replaced again at 211K - free to me due to above warranty. LX doesn't have a spool valve so oil leak was not an issue with alternator. Both the OEM and the first Advance Auto replacement failed in the same manner - dash light started coming on intermittently so I was able to replace both before either failed entirely.

Contrary to the service manual, easiest way to replace alternator is to remove the right front headlight assembly - gives you all kinds of room to maneuver it out.

My '02 has both original at 155k. But the last 12 years, 65 k have been almost all highway driving with trips in the 25-75 mile range, in the warmer weather, daylight. As easy as it gets on those two items. Much more meaningful than just miles.

After 18 years and 156,600 miles my original starter failed. Just replaced it four months ago with a Denso remanufactured, Part #: DEN 2806000, $194 NAPA auto parts (after core reimbursement). DIYd it after removing that pesky battery tray, and loosening the ABS module. I wish I would have changed out the tranny filter which is easily accessible after the tray is removed. But I didn't know that at the time.

My 2010 EX-L with 257K miles is still using the original starter. The spool valve leak got to the alternator at 195K.

My alternator went out at 210k on my 2009 LX Odyssey. It started making a whining sound, but the mechanics I spoke to at Honda said it was impossible because "Alternators either work or they don't." Then one day my battery light came on, and an independent mechanic said the alternator was out, so we replaced it. The starter is original.
