Hi,

I'm having a hard time finding instructions to do a drain and fill for the Transmission Oil in my 2012 Odyssey.

Does anyone have any pictures or links on how to do it?

They have videos on the previous models where people remove the Bolt labeled "ATF" below break fluid area.

Is the bolt labeled "ATF" okay for me to try to remove to fill transmission oil? Or do i need to do it through the dip stick? I haven't found a tube small enough to go through the dip stick.

any help would be great.

Thanks

Hopefully someone will come along and help a bit more, but I'm pretty sure my '07 is essentially the same as the '12 in terms of the drain and fill. The drain bolt will be on the passenger side of the trans case and rather than having a traditional hex bolt head it has a 3/8" square drive that a 3/8" ratchet fits into. The fill bolt is a 17mm hex bolt on top of the trans case straight down from and slightly left of the brake fluid reservoir and it takes a very long extension to get to it as well as a long funnel. It is not marked in any way that I have noticed. Some here do fill through the dipstick tube using a small diameter funnel, but I have always just removed the fill bolt.

I have a 2012 TE with 6-speed. The ATF recessed square drive bolt is located under the passenger side of the transmission towards the front of the transmission case. Remove that bolt and drain what you can from the tranny. Reinstall the drain bolt and fill the same amount of fluid removed through the dipstick. For the 12TE it is located to the right looking down at the engine from the front. There are is a dipstick that you have to remove and use a long extended funnel to pour the replacement ATF into the transmission. Its a simple 15 minute job.

I have done 2 out of 3 drain and fills to date in my attempt to change out the OEM fluid. Fill 1 took 3.5 quarts and fill 2 took 4 quarts. I did let the transmission drain until it was no longer dripping (about 1 hour) while I did other things. My understanding from reading forums is anywhere from 3-4 quarts. This is on a 2012 TE with 6-speed. Not sure about the 5-speed.

The funnel/tube fits over the dipstick tube pretty tight. Found the long black funnel good fit and easy to use. HF, walmart, pepboys, etc have them. There is also a funnel with tube in Walmart (I think it had measure marks and a cap at the end). I stuff some napkins/cloth around the tube and then put the funnel/tube over it. Most fit over. I think there was a red quick funnel or whatever its called fits in the tube. The long one is easier to use because it fits and is pretty stable. I just flip the can in it and it holds straight.

If you put a dab of oil at the tip and can fit that tube over the tube, you are good to go.

My next question is do you drain and fill warm or cold?
Warm here. Like motor oil..it flows faster when warm.
I drop the drain nut first. It burps out slow. Then pull the dip stick allowing in air and the oil runs out fast. One minute later...it's all out. Measure how much came out and put that much back in. Last weekend it was 3 quarts exactly. Other times it might be 3.25 quarts.

I put the Ody up on jack stands at the front jacking points to do oil & ATF changes. However, since we can only partially replace the ATF fluid with a D/R, I let it drain until it has almost stopped and then jack up the rear of the van as high as I can with the floor jack to tip the car and can drain another half quart to a full quart more.

You might try this next time you are changing the ATF.

I have the six speed in a 2011 Touring and I do the three drain and fill sequence to get all the old fluid from the torque converter. Draining the pan only gets about half of the overall fluid out of the system. By draining, filling, driving, draining, filling, etc... for three drains and fills you exchange all the old fluid for fresh. Yes it's a bit of a waste but I prefer to do it this way. Others just drain the fluid and add once but do it much more often. I to it every 30K miles.
