hi guys ...
I need an upgrade on my audio
nothing to fancy or too expensive just clean,crysp audio and some base feel...
what should I do
do I have to change the head unit? what speackers do you guys recomend for the van?
whats the size of the speackers?
as you can see I dont know much about audio...
the van is a EX without the DVD ,only OEM CD stereo

Easiest and least expensive is to change out the door speakers to better ones. The Sony 6.5 inch ones are pretty good and will give more solid bass response but you must turn it up to feel or hear the difference. These are readily available at Pep Boys, Wally World, etc.

You do have to cut out some of the hard plastic backing in the door for clearance though.

The stock speakers are really low grade.

You don't need a wiring pin out if you use a Metra adapter. It plugs into the Honda plug and has labeled leads. They even make them for the speakers. That way it's completely reversible. In the second generation Ody, the front speakers are 6.5" and mount with three screws. 99-01 vans have 4" speakers in back. (02-04 6.5 in back) One of the best ways to learn about this around here is to do a simple search on say, speaker upgrade or head unit replacement and then start on the last page of results. We had many knowledgeable members way back when these now older vans were current. you need to look at old threads.

I just purchased some Infintiys 6022i for the van I got 4 6.5" speakers ...the guy told me that they could fit the 6.5 on the back of the 2001 van ,I told him i wanted the OEM look and NON of the hip spining covers for me...he told me it could be done...
I went to my house to see if I could do it myself before paying someone else to do it for me and dam it those are some freaking small useless speakers on the back ,incredible 4'' speakers on a 25+K$$ vehicle
as I test fitted the 6.5 inch speakers on the panel they seem to be huge for that space it requires some mayor modifications to make it fit and
to make matters worst there are some A/C lines routed trough that spot and the seat belt tensioner box is there too
dam, I want them to fit flush so i can use the OEM cover ...
tomorrow im gona go back to the store and see if they can do the job ,cause no way Im installing tiny 4'' on the back
...

I actually looked at those Infinity speakers when I upgraded. :nice:

I went with 6.5" Pioneers TS-A1672R in the front and 4" Pioneer TS-G1041R in the back. Felt the 4"ers were fine for the kids in the rear.

replaced the OEM 4'' on the back with Infinitys 5.25 ,,,its a pain in the a... to fit those 5.25 there you have to cut lots of plastic stuff and the belt restrai system is on the way,so are the back A/C lines...now im up to get me a new subwoofer...and some window tints on the front,ohh and instal the mudsplash guards

stereo replacement-unbelievable radio!

The stock radio finally went out.
Replaced it with a Kenwood KDC-MP438U......Wow! The Kenwood has a front USB and aux in connection as well as the ability to connect an IPOD, hands free bluetooth phone(with accessory), HD radio (with separate tuner). This unit has 22 watts RMS (50 watts peak) per each of 4 channels and a subwoofer out as well as line voltage outs if you want to connect to an external amplifier. I bought it at Best Buy and had them do the install for $50.

This radio makes the Odyssey sound like a $2000 stereo system! I was running my GPS while I was recharging my palm pilot through the USB port and playing music from the palm pilot via the aux in connection. This was the first time I could hear the rear speakers since they never had much volume from the stock radio. The sound is incredible. I didn't know the stock speakers could sound that good. I am hearing music sounds I have never heard before from the same song. It is almost the quality of music you get from professional headphones. I also quick loaded some MP3's on the flash drive and it read and played them flawlessly in the USB port. I also played music through the palm pilot thru the aux input on the rear speakers while I played a CD on the front speakers. I don't know how practical playing two different pieces of music at the same time really is but it was fun to do it. I can't turn the volume up full because it is just too unbearably loud. Why you would need a separate power amp is beyond me.

Replacing the Honda HU will definitely improve the sound. I'm surprised it's that great an improvement without replacing the speakers, too! Congrats.

I replaced the HU on my last vehicle with a Sony and kept the factory speakers. That made a huge improvement like yours, but Toyotas seem to have better stock speakers. I'm considering installing a sound processor and amp to drive my Infinity's soon.

I think comparing replacing a radio and keeping factory speakers, and saying that it sounds like a $2000 stereo is a little of an over-exaggeration. I mean when was the last time you heard a $2000 stereo in a car?

I mean its good that you think it improved the sound, and that you're happy with it, but there's no way it sounds as good as a properly built fully integrated aftermarket system.

The OEM system really sucks big time, hence adding the 25W RMS per channel Kenwood would make a significant difference. Perhaps not as good as 2K will get ya, but a noticeable improvement.

separate power amp...

A separate power amp is the best way in most instances to power a subwoofer. If you don't think you are ever going to add a sub, you won't need one. Or wait until you are about ready to do the sub to get the amp.....

has anyone upgraded the stereo and kept the steering wheel controls intact? i have 2001 ex with NAV, but the OEM radio is am/fm with cd. i'd like to upgrade to something more recent with aux input and/or usb input & maybe bluetooth. has anyone does this?

will the factory stereo of more recent models fit? do they even have these feature?
