First of all, upgrading a minivan with subwoofers, changing the Honda speakers, amplifiers? Are you kidding me? I thought I was the only one...

Polk Audio seperates up front (soon to be replaced after reading this forum)
Polk coax in the back (4" for the 2001 model :(
Soundstream USA 100 driving the Image Dynamics ID10D4 in a fiberglass box behind the seat
The Sony CD unit just died, and I am envious of all of you 3rd gen owners so I am going with a Kenwood Excelon 8019 (I think) with GPS add on.

Bass Package Connection

Hi ironcheffx,

I bought a Subwoofer with an amplifier and not very sure how to do the job. If I'm gonna placed it at the back, where can I get my power and gnd connection? Do I need to directly connect it to the head unit or just hook it from one of the speakers at the back?

Thanks,

I got 2 channel 2X100 Mobile Authority w/ subwoofer and the other one is 4 ch. 250watts. I'm planning to just use the 4 ch but not really sure where I can get the supply if I placed it in the lower glove boxes. Can I just bridge it with the supply and gnd from the head unit?

thanks a lot for your response.

I don't recommend using the power or ground from inside the vehicle for amps of that size. The only way I'd do so is with a small, self amplified sub like some Bazooka tubes. The proper way is to run at least an 8 gauge, fused wire from the battery to the amplifier(s) and use an 8 gauge wire for the ground. The ground should be as short as possible and be grounded near the amps location. Two great spots for the amps would be under the passenger seat if the amp is not too big or in the lazy susan area.

Hi mike,
I am thinking to install my amp under driver seat since i dont want to lose the drawer, Is there any firewall gromet in the driver side area ?
i was thinking it will be easier and will use shorter cable.

did you drill a hole in the firewall gromet?

sorry for all this questions and thank you for all your response. right now I'm trying to test both amplifier. I've connected the power directly to the battery and gnd to the chassis and power light indicator does not come on.
I have already replaced the fuse just to be sure but still no signal.

In the power section of the amps, between Power and Gnd there's Rem. Do I need to connect that somewhere?

Yes. The remote needs a 12 volt signal along with the power and ground for the amp to turn on.

As for routing wire, I used an existing gromet in the passenger side firewall to run the power wire from the battery. I never found a convenient to access one on the driver's side.

that's why it's not working. thanks a lot for all the info.

Hi Ironcheffx,

This afternoon, I tried to test my amps with my factory stereo but when I check the back of the head unit, there is only two sets of connector. The connector wires doesn't even have any labels on what signals is coming out.

So, how were you able to connect your amps with the factory stereo? I'm looking for the REM pins but I don't know which one is it. And, also the input signal going to the amps.

thanks,

Just wanted to thank ironcheffx for this thread and wanted to add a link to the thread that will help anyone else with the ANC issue.

ANC Link

So far only have the following installed, nothing is finalized.

2 12" subs in custom made box (this box is actually one of 3 boxes that are used in my shop)

1 Lanzar Vibe 286 4000 watt amp running @ 2 ohm

4 gauge amp wiring

All set in the rear well area.

This is a temp setup, New amp is ready (MTX 3404) and need to make a new sub box that will hold 1 12" MA sub (this is the second system we have built with this sub/amp combination and it is dangerous)

When the final sup setup is done I will post pictures of the setup, was going to install the amp/s in where the lazy susan was in prior models (08 and on do not have the lazy susan any more) but was concerned with heat and venting. The sub amp will be mounted on the sub itself in the rear well. Amp/s for the front speakers will have to go somewhere else though, will cross that hurdle when it comes up.ANC Link

honda wire harnesses

Stock amp with new harness:
Ironcheffx,

I know this thread is pretty old but I was hoping you could give me some direction on the harnesses you used for the JL CleanSweep install. I'm installing to a 2007 EX-L RES. Also, I looks like you made you own molex connectors in earler posts.

I want to avoid cutting OEM wires so I'm looking at the 73-1721 harness here: http://www.installer-parts.com/by_item.php?it=71-1721 to connect the CS to the OEM Amp.

Is there a female connector to complement this for the aftermarket amp to the speaker plug removed from the factory amp?

HU -->OEM AMP --->JLCS--->Aftermarket amp-->speakers

Thanks in advance.

I used several Metra harnesses to make the ones I wanted. This is a real pain in the rear as some pins need to be carefully added to one and subtracted from another. Unless you're really comfortable with wiring diagrams, I'd stay away from this and have a local shop do it for you.

However, I have the two custom wire harnesses for sale if you want them! I went in a different direction with my setup and they're just laying around.

I've been experimenting for the last year to come up with the most balanced system for my ears and I surprisingly found out that it didn't require aftermarket amps, big subs, or the cutting of the ANC line! The system now sounds better and hits almost as hard as my complicated, re-do everything approach! Here's the details:

JL Audio XR-650CSi **Mid bass woofer in front doors, tweeter in stock locations.

JL Audio TR-650CXi **Rear, stock locations.

JL Audio 6W3v3 **In JL spec, poted sub box located in lazy susan compartment.

Dynamat Extreme **Complete coverage for front doors and around the rear speakers.

All of this uses the stock Touring, Pioneer amplifiers and sounds AMAZING! No more screechy highs and muddy lows. Accurate, punchy bass. Those XR's are simply breathtaking. They pound like mini subs in the doors and shake the mirrors by themselves! The little 6W3V3 adds that nice, deep tone to the XR's shaking which rounds it all out beautifully. I've never been a big sub fan, so this setup is just right for me.

Trust me, skip the wiring harnesses for now and try this setup. Even if you don't have a Touring, at least switch to the speakers and Dynamat before doing anything else. Oh, and don't skip the Dynamat. The XR's will vibrate your door panel and create buzzing.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly:

You aren't using the JL Cleansweep anymore and you simply connected the JL componets above to the factory amp.

Is that right??

My EX-L RES is very weak (no factory amp like your Touring) - I can turn it up and the mid-range barely overcomes road noise - drops out with increasing volume. I've never really focused on audio on my vehicles but this is terrible.

Seems that I will have use CleanSweep/aftermarket amp since I would expect aftermarket speakers alone would make the power and EQ issue even more obvious to my untrained ears.

The Cleansweep is on order but haven't decided on the amp yet. I'm looking at a 4-way Rockford Fosgate mated with the 6.5 Boston's you used or the some 6.5 Polk components. The JL equipment you have I'm sure is very nice but my budget (wife) will not allow.

Point taken. I forgot that the Touring has external amplifiers. That being said, if you want the harnesses needed for the connection mine won't work. I needed them to take the output from the Touring amp and make it an input for the Cleansweep. Then I had another harness that took the output from the amps and sent them straight to the speakers. No cutting of factory wires, very clean.

My suggestion would be to get two of each of these harnesses:

Metra 71-1721 (plugs into back of radio)
Metra 70-1721 (plugs into vehicle harness, which formerly plugged into back of radio)

You need two harnesses of each type so that you have the extra pins/wires that you'll need as both Metra harnesses are not completely pinned out. Then you'll need to study the wiring diagram color codes coming out of and into the head unit to create the harness you need to input the Cleansweep. Then you'll need another harness to connect to the factory connector that used to plug into the head unit.

Thanks for your help ironcheffx!

With your connection list and the service manual, it should be a piece of cake to pair-up the harnesses on the workbench and then casually plug everything into a mounted CleanSweep/ AMP. (Clean and easy to pull when I sell the van).

Now I just need to get one of those psychodelic "Respect the Van" stickers and I'm set.:p

I'm in the process of creating a custom harness to loop in my JL CleanSweep and an aftermarket Amp with ironcheffx's inspiration. My EX-L doesn't have a separate OEM Amp like the the Touring so the wiring is a little different than ironcheffx's. I'll get some pictures and diagrams up as I move along with the harness.

Right now I'm looking at this: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_489AP1040/Profile-AP1040.html?tp=115 Profile 4 -way amp as it appears to provide the best THD and S/N for the money.

I'm not sure about the speakers yet.

Now off to splice that harness together.

Good luck and you can do it!

I'm doing the same thing right now but with an even bigger PITA! I'm attempting to tap the amplifier wiring harness on the Bose system in my Infiniti G37. Bose is not easy my friends. I've been prepping with the schematics for days!
