We recently purchased a new 2012 Odyssey EX-L RES. I have noticed that the Auto-dim feature of the Rear View Mirror doesn't work very well. There have been many times where there were car lights behind me making it very difficult to drive (especially if the car has a poorly aimed headlight), yet the the mirror didn't dim like it is supposed to. This is a big problem as it creates a safety hazard And before you ask, yes it is turned on (the green light is lit up). There are other times when it seems to work as expected. Is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor?

"When driving after dark, the automatic dimming rearview mirror reduces the glare from headlights behind you. Press the AUTO button to turn this function on and off. When activated, the AUTO indicator comes on."

As I read the above statement from the Owner's Manual, the auto-dim feature can be turned off. Is yours turned off by chance?

I don't think there is any way to adjust it, it is either ON or OFF. Mine works very well it dims to just the right levels to block out glare but you can still see the outline of the car very well. Does yours work at all? So if yours does not work well to block glare, may be you just need to get the dealer to check it out.

I don't have the van with me currently to check, but there should be a light sensor on the back of the mirror. This may not be the cleanest of solutions, but you can try putting a small piece of translucent scotch tape over the sensor to reduce the amount of light hitting it. It might fool it into thinking the environment is darker than it actually is. If you block all the light, it will probably dim during the day for normal sunlight.

I thought the sensor was on front and was to detect relatively bright lights coming at the mirror, perhaps there are both. There have been a few instances where I would be say driving east in the afternoon during sunset where the sun was right in the rearview mirror, and the mirror actually dimmed the sun. The mirror dimming also seems vary depending on conditions as opposed to the night mirror either being on or off.

Self-dimming mirror owners have been discussing this issue for years but no adjustment feature has ever been introduced. some work-arounds:

cover ambient sensor to make the mirror behave as if ambient light is darker.
turn mirror upside down so headlight sensors get a clearer view of headlights over the trunk lid.
replace with a non-self-dimming mirror.
write Honda and hope next year's model is improved, finally.
