KYB Strut Mount

Hi folks,

Yet another front suspension question. I've searched for something specific to the strut mount question but I didn't see anything (spent about 2 hours or so...)

I was told by a Honda mechanic that I needed to replace my front strut assembly. I do have the slow speed clunking noise that is going noticeably louder and louder on certain bumps. Years ago Honda performed the TSB on our van. I am actually not entirely 100% sold that the whole strut assembly is to blame. My initial thought could be just the sway bar links and sway bar bushing, so I was a little surprised when he told me I need the strut assembly changed.

The Honda mech will charge me $400 for the labor cost including alignment. He will do the job inside the dealership but considered as a "side job." Our van currently has 118k miles so it may also be time. I've also asked him to change the sway bar links and swat bar bushing while at and agreed.

I do plan on going the KYB route from RockAuto. What am I not sure about is which strut mount to use.

My VIN number is CB140202. If I follow what RockAuto recommends, I should be using KYB SM5688. However, upon looking at the photo for reference, it didn't quite look right to me... it looks to be different from what my van currently has... the KYB SM5730 looks to be more identical to what is installed.

For those who has a 2012 with higher VIN numbers past 088499, which mount do you guys use?

KYB SM5688
Front; From Chassis/VIN # CB088499

OR

KYB SM5730
Front; To Chassis/VIN # CB088499

Do I need other parts such as seat spring, shock bearing, etc? Anything I am missing?
I know the sway bar links and bushing are relatively less time consuming DIY job. Should I even consider changing those first before replacing the struts themselves, or just do it all at once and bite the $400?

I have a 2013 with a driver side front clunk at low speeds as well. It's been going on for a long time. I replaced the sway bar links 80k miles ago and though perhaps it was time again. Frankly they're so cheap and easy to replace, why not. It definitely wasn't the cause of the clunk though. I also replaced the front strut assembly entirely with KYB's version of "quickstrut". Still the clink did not go away but then again they were 157,000 miles on the OEM's so it was time, no tears.

Within the last 50k miles I've replaced both the left AND the right control arms, so I have newish ball joints, and I've replaced both tie rods. There's so little left I could replace.

I am going to be replacing the OEM bearings hub on both sides because the passenger side is done, so do them both at once and while doing so and everything off, I was going to replace the sway bar bushings and pray that's the problem otherwise I am out of ideas. I've heard some people having to replace engine mounts but mine look good and I don't see any engine play when gassing it.

Thanks. Where did you source the KYB quick strut assembly? How are they? I couldnt seem to locate one anywhere including online retailers.

I plan on replacing the bushings and sway bar link first and see if that will eliminate the sound, as well as checking the torque in the strut mounts… if that doesn’t resolve anything, then I will decide to replace the struts… hopefully that solves my issue.

IME clunking/rattling sound over bumps can result from worn sway bar bushings. Both sides on my Ody, along with one of the links, were spent around 70k miles. So far I have about 80k on the replacement bushings (Moog) and no rattles. YMMV

I bought OEM Honda.

You need to verify your top mount type by getting a peek in at the top of the strut through the access hole, there are two for the Ody... replacement "bearing" type will be dependent on this.
my 2011 TE had the KYB SM5730 type top mount.

if the rubber bushing for your stock top mounts are ok, you can reuse these to save money just replace the disk "bearing" which is "cheap"

remove any rust from the top mount bearing seat and grease the living hell out of them with a good synthetic suspension or axle grease. Make sure you buy the oem strut boot/bellow if you need to replace yours.

The KYB one is junk, and you have to graft it into the oem bellow/spring seat by cutting off the torn boot section.
idiocy...

I just bought oem and tossed the KYB ordered one in the trash.

Edit: link to another post with more complete info

Thanks 2011.2017. Having just looked at HondaPartsOnline.Com the parts for both sides including the dust shield bellows is ~$340.

Call me crazy, but it may be easier to instead of just replacing the mounts to simply purchase complete Strut assemblies from RA and simply swap since I'd have the old ones out anyways.
Likely would of gambled on the KYB strut assemblies if they were available when I did the job.

took a $$ hit on the OEM parts but its done now.

Keeping this van for another 10 years, so buy once cry once.

I have a driver's side clunk over bumps and i'm sure its near where the strut mount is located. I've had the wheel off 3x now and simply cannot find any play in the suspension, cannot replicate the sound when car is sitting still by either pushing up and down on car or turning the wheels, and there is no up and down play in the strut mount when pushing up and down on car. The exact locate is eluding me but it sure sounds like its above the wheel well. It's driving me nuts no pun intended and I need to do something.

I recently received a 2011 with a similar driver's side clunk. Replaced the struts, stabilizer end links and stabilizer mounts. Still didn't fix it. Came across a post on this forum to lubicate the steering column spline at the base of the steering column. Took 15 minutes to clean and lub the spline. Clunk was fixed. Might be worth a try.
