Mobil vs Honda oil

Sorry if this has been discussed already but I checked and couldn't find anything that matches. I took my new Odyssey in for its first oil change and noticed the dealer used Mobil. At least according to the sticker. Second one is due, at 14,000 miles no less, and I asked if they used Mobil or Honda oil. He said any major brand will due but they use Mobil or Honda. Mobil was used in mine last time. Why wouldn't they automatically use Honda oil? Doesn't it say somewhere on the quart of oil that it is "specifically formulated for Honda engines"?? Should they be using Honda oil on my new warrantied van or is Mobil O.K.? Anybody?

The conventional oil at my Honda dealer says made by mobile on the bottle. Its one and the same. The synthetic mix does not. And, there is no full synthetic option at my dealer.

Ask yourself this: Is Honda known for making cars or motor oil? Is Mobil known for making cars or motor oil?

Even with the F1 team they don't formulate their own oils, they have a supplier who does it.

Mobil will treat your Honda just fine. I put Mobil 1 15000 mile extended performance 5W30 in mine. If you wonder why the 5W30 instead of the 5W20, read one of the older threads on the matter.

Thank you all for clearing that up. It makes sense of course. Don't know why I was even worried. I have a 1990 Accord with 188K on it and neither leaks nor burns oil. Still runs like new. If there are any repairs needed years from now, it probably won't be engine related. At least not because of my oil.

Amen! But your wisdom seems lost on the oil obsessors. Some of them seem to need a psychiatrist more that an auto parts store. :D

Any well known oil supplier will be fine.
Quite right. If you want to be more specific, Honda specifies an API service level that they require. It's in the manual. (I would have given you the details, but I am in Nashville, TN right now and my manual is far away at home.)

oil

bbylon5 nailed it.

ALL 5W20 API-SM oils meet Honda, Acura, and Ford specs.

Currently, Mobil makes Honda oil, but it is NOT the Mobil1 synthetic product.

The dealer will use the cheapest bulk oil he can get that meets spec. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as there is no such animal from any major supplier as a "bad" API-SM 5W-20.

Look at the back of the oil bottle for API SM and ILSAC GF4. These standards meet Honda requirements. For details see: http://www.swri.edu/4ORG/d08/GasTests/ilsac.pdf
http://www.burkeoil.com/pdf/oilguide.pdf

Most oils meet these standards. If they do not, avoid them.
Also, dealers could use any bulk oil. Mine uses bulk 5W30 even though the owners manual asks for 5W20. Still, 5W30 should work well.
I would avoid that dealer if I was in your situation. Honda is very specific that only 5W20 should be used. I am surprised that the dealer is putting in 5w30.
5W30 may work just fine and dandy, but why risk it on purpose?

I only use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and I do a change about every 5K to 6K miles. I have a 1997 Nissan Maxima that has 245,000 miles on it and the engine is clean as a whistle. Never had any mechanical problems (other than having to replace the starter and altenator). I bought my 2002 Odyssey 1 1/2 years ago with 45K miles on it and have been using nothing but Mobil 1 in that too.

Love them 4.4L jugs...

I am using Motomaster (Canadian Tire) Formula 1 Synthetic.
From what I have read its really FormulaShell Synthetic
5w20 SM rated.
Change every 3000 miles which for me is about 6 months.
Comes in perfectly sized 4.4L jugs which is exactly the capacity with filter change, no half filled 1L bottles left over...
I just carry the one jug out, prefill the filter, pour the rest in the engine, pour the used oil in the now empty jug and I'm done...

I don't think it matters, I heard on an oil forum that Honda oil is made by mobile/exxon. Oil analysis showed that there was nothing special about the oil. 5w20 was formulated specifically for Ford and Honda engine specs. Any well known oil supplier will be fine.
I heard that their oil is made by different brand name oil producers in different parts of N. America
