P0404 code

Last couple of days the van has been acting up. I don't really know how to explain it or where to start. When I tried to accelerate, it acted as if the transmission is slipping...like it didn't want to shift into the next gear. At the same time the CEL would flash at me, but would stop as soon as it shifted into the next gear. I thought the slipping in the transmission was causing a misfire...which I didn't know was possible. The CEL would come on, then go off on it's own...found that strange. I didn't have time last night to check the codes. Checked the codes this afternoon and all I got was a P0404. I was surprised I didn't get any misfire codes.

I replaced all the plugs and coils about 3K miles ago...NGK and Denso on those. I had previously gotten an EGR code...don't remember which one. I cleaned the EGR and still got codes, so I replaced the EGR less than 1K miles back. I'm not sure what it's called, but the part on top of the engine where the EGR gasses recirculate, cleaned that at the same time I replaced the EGR.

I'm at a loss. I can say when the engine is cold it runs fine. The warmer the engine gets the worse the problem gets. Any ideas? I'm totally at a loss what to do, or where to start.

When was the last drain and fill of the transmission?

This is the hose I mentioned previously. I can't tell if it's cracked enough to leak or not. I put some electricians tape over it as a temporary...hopeful...fix.

I cleaned everything as best as I could. I went through almost an entire bottle of throttle body cleaner in the process. If anyone can tell me how to remove that piece on the right side...you can see the two shiny bolts. I was able to get them off, but couldn't remove that butterfly...whatever shape you want to call it...part.

And lastly, I removed and checked the EGR valve. You can't really tell from the pic, but it looks brand new...which it is.

Update: After all I did to it yesterday...cleaning the EGR, and I changed the trans fluid...I took it for a drive this morning. Drove about 6 miles out, and 6 back. Got it up to about 60 to 65. It ran fine on the way out. When I flipped around to come home, it did it again. It was fine until it got up to about 60 and it didn't want to shift gears, then the CEL flashed at me. Got home and checked the codes and had nothing. There were a couple of stored codes for P0301 and P0306 along with the random misfire code. Cleared those.

So I decided to put the old EGR valve back on and give that a try. I drove the exact same route...6 miles out, 6 miles back...no problems. No CEL no nothing. I checked the codes and it showed no current codes. It did show a stored p2413 and P0420 and P0430. I had gotten the 420 and 430 codes before. I cleared those and we'll see how it goes.

Well I'm back, and it's doing it again. Codes I got were P02413, P0404, P0430 and P0420. Also got some misfire codes, and the random misfire code. I've noticed it does it more after everything is well warmed up, and when I'm going over say 50mph to 55mph. At lower speeds it's fine, most of the time. A hiccup now and then but nothing bad. When I get on the highway and try to get up to 65 if when it really starts. I did get it to about 65mph once, but usually it didn't want to go over 50. I'm beginning to think it's the cats.

I also got a P0685 code...had to look that one up. I had removed the negative terminal when I was working on it. A couple of times yesterday on some rough roads the radio blinked on and off, all the lights on the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, and then went dark, then came back on just fine until I hit another rough spot. I checked the battery terminals and the negative one was a bit loose. It didn't do it today, so I'm guessing that's the P0685 cause.

I believe this may be your problem. There’s a YouTube video where a tech chases down an EGR valve problem and he used the same standard products brand valve. Ultimately his fix was to purchase a genuine Honda EGR valve to finally get the Honda engine to run right. I understand it’s three times the amount but something for you to consider. Another option (other than the aftermarket) would be to look at some online salvage yards (eBay etc…) with proof of mileage and get a used valve.

here is the video:

The Standard EGR valve I bought does come with a 3/36K warranty, so I should be able to return it.

I looked at Hondapartsonline...I think that was the sight. I don't mind paying that much more for an EGR valve if it will fix the thing. My only concern is if that's the actual problem. If it's not, then I spent $200 something for nothing. But I'll give it a try, I just want it fixed.

Edit: I hunted it down. Is this what I need? Genuine Honda EGR Valve - Honda Parts Now

Just an update: It's the cats...according to the shop I took it to.

I installed the new Honda EGR valve. Took it for a test drive, my usual route of test driving...6 miles out, 6 miles back, got up to 65mph, no problems at all. Took it to work the next morning, I live about 5 minutes from work, no problem. Took it out on my route, got in about 20 minutes or so, and it started doing it again. Only this time it was worse. Still did the thing where when I got up to a certain speed...usually around 30 to 35...it didn't want to go any faster, starts misfiring, then would stop misfiring and speed on up. Only this time it got to where it wouldn't get above 30. As time went on it got to where it wouldn't get above 20. No misfiring, just wouldn't go any faster. It got to where I was going 10mph or less, even with the pedal on the floor. So I gave in and took it to a local shop I trust. Explained all that to them, and they looked at it and said it's the cats. I hope this fixes it. The closest Honda dealership is 65 miles away, no way I could get it there.
