Removing the second row seats

As we all know, the second row seats in the 2018+ Odys are heavy, will not fold flat and will not lock in the forward tilt position. So it's difficult (and somewhat dangerous) to remove the seats.

I just posted a video on youtube that shows a jig I made to remove our second row seats. If you are wary of pulling your back while removing those seats, the jig might help you out. Anyway, it might be entertaining.

Hope it helps some folks,

I remember this jig when you first showed us your seat puller back a while ago. I wish that I had a garage to store things like this. Although I am trying to get a garage built now (I'm having fun trying to get the City Inspector to allow for setback rules) and using my hard earned retirement fund.

It's truly is a well thought out design for a usefulgizmo :)!

Thank you and great job on the video. Even for those that can lift the seats without any issues, this method is still preferable and practical in so many ways. (y)

DJVAN,
I'm storing my jig in the rafters of our carport since we don't have space anywhere else. So I need a ladder to take down and put up but I only need to remove the 2nd row seats rarely when we go to the beach and want to lie down in the back. ..... Thanks for your kind comments!

digital extremes,
You're welcome and thanks for watching. We used to have a 2002 Sienna before getting our Ody and it was MUCH easier to remove the 2nd row seats than the ones in our 2019 Ody. But I was younger then .... ha, ha.

unlock42,
Thanks for your kind comments. I'm too old to be pulling my back anymore ;) .

Dmako,
Thanks for you kind comments. My wife wants me to leave the 2nd row seats out like you, but we absolutely have no where to store them. I just leave them in our carport on the dollys behind some shelving when they are removed. Probably no one wants to steal those heavy monstrositys anyway :) .

Thanks all,
Raptor88

Removing the 2nd row seats reveals the crazy bumpy floor in the cargo area. I built a false floor for the cargo area behind the 2nd row seats that can be seen in my youtube video. Also built an extension false floor for when the 2nd row seats are removed. I'll be posting a youtube video on my build later. Meanwhile, here's a couple of pics of the before and after:

It's a joy to install a 3" thick tri-fold matress and a couple of pillows when we go to the beach to lie down and relax in the van.

That looks excellent. Great job. I was just thinking about how an air mattress, rather if an air mattress would hide the bumps if we were to sleep back there... I'm thinking that it depends on how thick the air mattress is.

Agreed, Dmako. The extreme chair weights and the inability for them to fold flat is only half the problem. It's that stupid bumpy floor left behind that is basically useless or actually dangerous for some users. It's probably the dumbest design I've ever seen and proof it wasn't designed by the Japanese! I seldom carry passengers so I installed a 4x8 sheet of plywood for my cargo. it comes out easily so the rear chairs can be used. On a brighter note, when it comes time to trade, the center row seats will be pristine, having never been used :)!

That's a fantastic job on the floor.
I plunked 3' foam behind the 2nd row seats for the dogs, and I feel ashamed now after seeing yours.

I think I need to do plywood under the foam first as my guys, Greyhounds, are big babies and complain all the time.

In my old run down volvo without mattress they sleep immediately

Thanks KaiserKai. Does seem that the raw bumpy floor of the 2018+ Odys might be dangerous for dog's paws.

Dmako, you should send that pic to the Honda engineers with the caption, "See what you can do if you use your brains!"

Seriously, would you please tip that upside down so we can see how you mounted the chair to the base, or is that a trade secret :)? I have two mint condition Ody seats stuck in the 45-degree position sitting in my basement. They are prime candidates for such a treatment.

I checked my Ody seats and to convert them to indoor seats like Dmako's Sienna seats is basically impossible with the way the Honda engineers designed the undercarriage to work with the sleds :(! Sad really because the second-row seats are very good in terms of long trips. They're as nice as the front row seats. Too bad the rest of the rear design is such a piece of crap.

I'm considering buying a 2021 (or 2022) Odyssey and trying to figure out how I would like to configure the back. I have 3 dog crates I need to fit in and am contemplating various potential configurations. I really like the false floor you built. Any chance you can give me more details on how you built it? What is under the carpeting? How did you manage to get it all so flat considering the bumpy nature of the Odyssey cargo area? Did you ever make a youtube video on your process? I would either like to do what you have done, or I would leave one of the 2nd row seats in and build the false floor around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking about it but did not make a youtube video for the false floor in our van. But the procedure is fairly simple. Refer to the picture for my post #27 above.

First move the 2nd row seats all the way back and position a 2x4 behind the seats. Use blue tape to mark the position of that 2x4. Since the false floor is in two pieces, this 2x4 will be where the joint will sit. The false floor is made out of one 4'x8' sheet of 3/8" thick plywood.

Remove the 2nd row seats. Get a long straight edge like a straight piece of 1x4 and lay on top of the high points. In the 2019 we have it's fairly level from the top of the folded 3rd row seats to the top of the bases for the 2nd row magic sliding seats.

Then as shown in my post #27 above, lay three 2x4's across the width of the van as shown by the 2 red and one green and they will just about fit under the straight edge correctly. The red 2x4 just behind the 2nd row seats will be in the position marked by the tape. I forgot now whether I had to rip any of the 2x4's but I think I didn't have to do that.

Now for the two horizontal red 2x4's, cut notches in them for the 4 vertical red pieces which are 1x3 lumber. The top surface of the 1x3's should be flush with the tops of the two 2x4s. Screw the 1x3's to the 2x4's.
Cut a 4' x 8' sheet of 3/8" plywood so that the joint will sit in the center of the red 2x4 just behind the magic seats. Use 4 wood screws to screw the plywood floor to the red 2x4.

Now position the green 2x4 and lay the front plywood. The back edge of the plywood will sit on half of the red 2x4. Screw the front plywood the to green 2x4. The green 2x4 is about 3" back from the front edge of the front plywood. So when the front plywood is removed, the green 2x4 goes with it. Screw the back edge of the front plywood to the red 2x4.

Now you have a flat plywood floor. Remove the front plywood and install about 1/4" thick carpet on the back plywood folding the front of the carpet down and under the red 2x4 for about 4 inches. This will be how the carpet sits when the 2nd row seats are installed.

When installing the front plywood, lift the folded carpet from under the front red 2x4 and then install the front plywood. Lay the carpet on the front plywood. Then install another piece of carpet on the balance of the front plywood, butting the back carpet. You'll be able to figure out the rest of the details.

Where can I buy that “false floor”?
..
Home Depot??
They sell the floor that’s pictured here??
It's all here in this wonderful thread by Raptor88. He built it, you'll have to build yours.
