Tires for de-pax: size vs. load rating

My apologies if this has been answered somewhere in all the threads on de-paxing, but I have pored over many of them and have yet to see mention of tires with the appropriate load rating. Our 2005 Touring needs a new set of shoes so I want to get new rims and tires, but 16" styles are limited, the pax rims are essentially 17" on the outside face, and I'd like 17" better anyway. My concern is the fact that with 17" rims, 235/60R17's have a load rating of 102T, whereas the Touring calls for tires with a rating of 104T. This amounts to a total of 440 pounds difference. I contacted Continental to inquire about warranty coverage if I drop down to 102T. It of course won't honor the tire warranty if the tires don't meet vehicle spec. I understand that tire warranties are little more than sales tactics anyway, but should I worry about that or upsize to 235/65R17's which do have a 104T rating? They should fit the wheel wells based on all the 255/55R18's on MDX rims that folks seem to use. On the other hand, do I really need the 104T load rating when this van is primarily a kid hauler and only travels 50-100 miles a week?

Thanks for any insight

Where did you find the 104T spec? My 08 Touring calls for 102T. I just put on my second set of Goodyear Assurance Comfortread Touring that are 102H (just a little higher speed rating with the H).

The gross weight of the 08 Touring is 5707 lbs. If you divide that by four you get 1426 lbs. A 102 weight rating is good up to 1874 lbs. Sure seems like plenty of excess capacity to me, even if you add tongue weight with a trailer.

Yes, was just finishing the dishes and recalled reading in a thread that the '08 spec was 102, so I ran out just now, and the label on the driver's door jamb puts our '05 at GVWR of 5952 and calls for PAX tires with a 104T. I think you're correct that we should be totally fine with 102. The label may just be listing the specs of those Michelin PAX tires in a protectionist maneuver for its "wonderful" system.

Yeah, you're already "out of spec" by removing the PAX tires. I think you're comparing apples and oranges.

So, there is a couple hundred pound difference in the Gross Weight between the 05 and the 08...I didn't realize that. The funny thing is both year vehicles have nearly identical curb weights between the different models. So, they reduced the GVWR on the 08 either for the available tires or they did it for the fuel economy.

In reality, you and I are going to load our vehicles the same with little regard to the GVWR. I've filled mine to the gills many times (I have four kids) and have never had any issue. In reality, it's only 50 pounds per wheel difference between the two GVWR's. I'd say you want the highest rating you can get but you don't get any more than 103 in a 235/60/17 tire, and you really have to search for those. The Ridgeline is a 6000+ GVWR vehicle and it does call for a 105S but it's a 245/65/17 tire which would never fit on the Ody, even if you wanted it.

The 16" tires that the 05 Odyssey EX calls for on your year vehicle (which weighs 100lbs less than the touring) are 103 rated. If you're really concerned about it see if you can find some 103 rated tires in the 235/60/17. They're hard to find, though, and there are only two on TireRack.com...the Goodyear Eagle LS Grand Touring All Season, or the Yokohama Avid Ascend Grand Touring All Season.

If it were me, I'd go with the 17's and find the best tire I could at the most reasonable price.

Thanks for the input last night. I went ahead and made a snap decision to get 17" rims and a set of Continental TrueContact 235/60R17's. They have a 102T rating. I've had my eye on them for a few months, and a rebate offer was ending last night. I'll try them on our Touring, and if I notice some issue, I can put them onto our 2006 Odyssey LX, which calls for a 103T tire. It is essentially my wife's commuter car, but it is also badly in need of new tires and rims. I had mentioned some owners using 18" MDX rims and 255/55R18's to de-PAX. Some of those I saw were as low as 100T in touring models. Grand touring and SUV models are higher, I suppose. Anyway, I'll see how it goes and report back. Cheers.

When I depaxed, I used the Continental TrueContact tires and have been happy with them the last 2 years.

Even got the Continental snow tires on a separate set of rims. Will be putting on before the weekend is out.

You won't notice any issues except for no more super expensive pax tires. It's just a weight rating but with 102 you're still way under the rating. I wouldn't give it another thought. I'd shy away from the 100's, though. The problem is when you go up in rim diameter you have to come down in tire height/profile which usually reduces the weight rating. You'd be into a 55 series tire and your ride would suffer, as would weight rating. 17's are the sweet spot for the Ody...in my opinion, of course.

New wheels and tires came today, so I'll clean up the van and install them Saturday or Sunday. Anybody want a pristine set of PAX rims with shot tires? Useful, I know... Now the question is: rely on AAA or get a spare? Couldn't I get a "used" one from a junkyard? I'll look into that, but I've only ever had one flat on the road, and I routinely plug our tires at home on the rim on the vehicle in the driveway. Easy-Peasy
