Transmission Dipstick fluid level question

Hello, This is my first post. Lots of good info here.

Looking through the transmission service posts it appears to be quite easy. My question is how much ATF is required to go from the lower hole to the top hole on the transmission dipstick? I don't want to be adding 1oz at a time if that space takes a quart (I just do not want to overfill).

I plan to measure how much I remove and put that much back in (and checking the fluid level prior to draining). when I checked the fluid level last night it looked low (below the lower hole) but I doubt it was at "operating temp".

Thanks,
Scott

I never bothered to figure it out. I captured the fluid that was drained and measured it and put that much back in. I was within the proper range so I left it alone. I did 3 drains and refills over 10,000 miles and the fluid is now red not black. Each drain got out about 3-3.25 qts.

If you are adding fluid to top it off make sure your transmission is HOT before you start adding. If you fill it up at room temperature it will be too full at operating temperature.

I just did my ATF again yesterday

I used Maxlife this time, and used the Black Funnel Through the Dipstick Hole fill method {which still works amazingly perfect by the way}

I put in about 3 1/2 quarts and then tried to read it but I have such problem really seeing where the fluid is on that completely smooth dipstick. Why do they design it that way rather than the one with hashmarks for oil?

Anyway it looked like it still wasn't quite there so I just dumped in the rest of the gallon jug of Maxlife and called it a day. But that means I put in 4 Qts. Now I'm worried I'm overfilled or something.

I guess just take it on a good drive and then try to measure? From my searches on this board it appears that a significant overfill could have it venting from the transmission vent hole. I don't want to get the rumored "foaming" by overfilling but I am just hoping that 4 qts isn't an "overfill" so I don't have to go down there and try to crack open the plug and drip some back out. Can you feel a difference in driving if it is "foaming"?

Yes, the car will stop moving as the air-entrained ATF can no longer maintain hydraulic pressure.

So I drove it a lot past couple days and it seems just fine. Shifting a little smoother than before (although it wasn't problematic before the fluid change)

I measured hot and did it about 10 times, trying to really see the line of the fluid. It appears to be about 1/4 to 3/8 inch above the top hole on the dipstick. I'm going to just call it a day and assume it will be fine. Seems like cracking open the drain bolt and draining a little out isn't worth the inconvenience. Next time I will add around 3.25 quarts and then measure after driving and while level.
