What is wrong?

I have a 2006 EXL Odyssey. I love this car!!! Anyway, here is what is happening. Please bare with me as I am a non-mechanically inclined female and I may not say everything right.

About a month ago, I was driving home from work when a car on the left hit a deer. The deer flew in the air and landed on the front driver side of my car. It damaged my headlight assembly and cracked my grill pretty bad. I thought everything was fine until I started smelling anti-freeze the next day. I was afraid my radiator was cracked. I had someone look at it and he was going to replace it, but I didn't have the money for it at that time. After a few days of me refilling it, I had no more problems.. To be honest, I am not sure if it needed coolant before the deer incident because it had been awhile since I checked it. I had no more problems with the radiator though. However, about a week after hitting the deer, my transmission started acting "crazy" out of the blue. I had no prior problems and so, I was thrown by this. The problem was initially of it hesitating before it would change gears. For instance, I would be driving and as I accelerated, it would get to 3 gear and rev up because I had my foot on the gas. I would take my foot off the gas pedal and it would go ahead and change gears about 2-3 seconds later. It has continued this, but now, it is shifting very hard into 3rd and 4th gear. What I have been doing is taking my foot off the accelerator so it doesn't "bang" into gear. I've heard of the limp mode and sometimes it does this for about 3 seconds before it shifts.

I have taken it to many transmission specialists and they all keep telling me to rebuild my transmission. I am sure they are more than willing to charge me $2300. They never look for anything else. One place I took it to replaced my solenoids, but I don't really trust them because they told me before I could do anything to fix my car, I needed a tune up. Just to inform you, my engine could not be heard and no smoke was coming from anywhere. I'm not daft or stupid. I know the engine has nothing to do with the transmission. However, I did what he said because I figured it couldn't hurt anything and a tune up was about due anyway. He charged me $450 for a tune up and to change the solenoids. He did not change the one on the front. In fact, I just found out about the solenoid on the front. He never mentioned that solenoid and even though he runs a transmission shop, I have heard from many others that he is not a specialist and I made a mistake in taking my car there. Despite doing all of that, it has continued to do the same thing. When my speed reaches around 20mph, it will either shift very hard, go limp mode for a few seconds before it shifts or shift normally. Most of the time, when I see my rpm at 3, I take my foot off the accelerator and it usually shifts without the hard bang.

My questions are:

1. Could hitting the deer caused the possible transmission issues?

2. Since the deer hit hard enough to almost destroy my headlight assembly and crack my grill, could it have knocked some wires loose in the front that goes to the transmission?

3. Could hitting the deer caused me to damage the A/T Gear Position switch?

4. Could hitting the deer caused me to damage the 3rd Clutch pressure switch?

5. Could hitting the deer caused me to damage the Shift Control Solenoid Valve C?

Based on the diagram I saw of the transmission and where the deer hit, the deer landed on one of the switches, if not all. The people I have taken my car to did not all check it and I forgot to mention that I hit the deer. It only registered with me when someone was telling me about the solenoid on the front of the transmission may be bad a few days ago . I am desperate, for lack of better words. I know what a transmission does, but I am not too familiar with the jargon that goes with it. However, I am willing and more than capable of looking something up. If you have an idea, want more clarification or simply have some more questions about my issue, feel free to contact me. I need all the help I can get and would definitely appreciate the help.

Even if you think you might not be able to help me, but having a similar issue, maybe we can help each other. I am a single mom of 4 kids (divorced) and I can't afford to get another vehicle. Not to mention, this vehicle is my primary transportation for work and to take my kids to their appointments, extracurricular activities and etc. Please help!!!

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.

You may be better off taking it to a Honda dealer and let them work up the estimate for the mechanical issues and their referred to body shop for the cosmetic damages. The comprehensive portion of your car insurance should cover it. The Honda people are your best source to have your Odyssey made right again. They have been to this dance many times. Good Luck and Welcome to the forum.

Yeah, no. While it should be true it's just not. In fact, most of the time the dealers will just tell you you need a new transmission, computer, etc.

@Cristoba, There are so many possibilities with this vehicle that it just needs a GOOD mechanic, whether it be the dealer or any other reputable shop. The "tune-up" thing is a bunch of hogwash, too. There is nothing to "tune up" on these unless you're due for your 105K miles service (timing belt, valve adjustment, spark plugs, etc.)

Unfortunately, you're going to have to find a reputable shop that can fix it. You MUST tell whoever is looking at it ALL the details you told us. Leaving out important info like "I hit a deer and this started happening a short while after" is really important to whoever is trying to fix it.

Another possibility is that the transmission fluid has coolant in it. This could happen from damage since the ATF cooler runs through the lower tank of the radiator.

Unfortunately, there's not going to be much we can do since we can't see the vehicle and the damage it sustained.

First, you need to determine your insurance situation, and whether they will cover you.

Second, was the antifreeze actually transmission fluid, and what is the level of both fluids?

Finally, if you know the dealer, and he has been good to you, go there. Otherwise, any shop, dealer or independent, can be honest or dishonest. It's kind of a crap shoot! Ask friends and work associates for recommendations.
