For about 3 Months I notice a whining noise when starting the van. I also had a CEL around the same time so I thought they were related.
The CEL was the O2 sensor. I replaced it but still have the noise.
I heard it louder in the cold whether.
It sounds like its coming from the driver side.
I replaced the Power steering fluid but still hear the noise.
I read a service bulletin about the power steering reservoir but it for 05 and up.
I have a 2000 ex with 130K.
Any sugestions?

I'd still vote power steering pump, except that's on the passenger side. Pumps go bad, especially when the fluid is ancient.

The transmission is the only real stuff on the driver's side.

I think I'd remove the power steering pump belt (it'll probably stop othe accessories too), and see if the noise goes away.

Check if the noise is affected by engine speed, or changes when the van is moving.

Does it go away after some number of seconds, like when a fluid warms up or something gets lubricated?

Ok I took the PS Belt off and started the car but still hear the noise.
I hear it most from the driver side maybe under the car near the cat coverter.
Not sure if that could be it.
I do hear a clunking noise everytime I pull out of the driveway while turning to the left.
(I also hear a thumping noise when I brake but I think thats the rear drums.)

Is the clunking when turning left repetitive? If so, perhaps that particular noise is from a CV joint.

There's also an anti-lock brake system pump motor hidden under the intake stuff, but it doesn't normally run, and if it ran continuously I'd expect there'd be a warning light about it.

I do hear a small amount of noise from that end of the transmission. Not clear what it is.

I just had a friend who use to be a mechanic look at it and he said it sounds like the tranny. he also was shifting the car from drive to reverse and it was making a large clunk noise.
He advise a tranny flush to see if it would clear it. if it starts to slip then the tranny would need to be replaced

The whining noise is often associated with restricted ATF flow screens inside the solenoid pipes. It causes transmission symptoms like you describe, such as slow gear engagement. Eventually it will cause clutch abrasion which leads to slippage.

See this thread for information on screen clogging: http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52345

A flush will not clear the debris from these screens. Consider servicing them ASAP to prevent additional wear.

I believe flushes are never advised in Ody transmissions.

Yes, drain and fill only. If you do a flush, do the research to find out exactly how it is performed and what machine.

The Honda dealerships usually use a machine that is ok, its not a pressure flush, it just basically an automated drain and fill.

And when you do have your tranny's screens cleaned up, make sure to replace the external filter on all of the '02+ trannys.

That along with the 3x drain/refill and regular maintenance be of great help.

We're @ 81K and still going stong. Just hope it lasts:rolleyes:

First I want to say thank you to everyone for all your info and links.
I started to clean the screens. I will finish the job tomorrow.
I also have an appointment to change the tranny fluid at the dealer on friday.
After I finish the screen cleaning and if it fix my problem then maybe I will cancel the dealer appointment and do it my self.
I blame my self for this problem because its been a long time since I changed the tranny fluid.
I stupidly followed advice from other people that told me not to change it because it will cause more problems later on.

BTW I have an 00 so it has no filter.
I just bought a 09 pilot and this car will just be a spare so I just want to get it running then let it rest. It has taken me from nj to fl and back about 4 times so it need a long rest.

Ok I finished cleaning the screens. they were not too dirty. after I reinstalled everything and tested the car it still has the noise.
I was not as load but it was very warm today and it seems to be louder when its cold.
Tomorrow the dealer is going to change the fluid. I hope it fixes it.

Im still not 100% that its the tranny.

does the Cat coverter make noise if its bad?

Do the drain and fills of Honda Z-1 ATF now and I expect you to notice a difference even after the first D&D. Do report back. Also consider installing a Magnefine ATF external filter in the return line - low cost and huge benefit for your 2000 IMO.

Well I took the van to honda for a tranny flush.
I did notice a smoother shifting (just a little)
I also took off the intake and sprayed the throdle body. Now my gas pedal is not sticky. I did take off the map sensor before I sprayed the throdle body.
After I let the car sit over night I started the van and I still hear the noise. It isn't as load but thats because its not as cold weather wise. the noise is loudest when it cold outside.
Im starting to think it's more of a whirrling noise and not a whinning noise.

Its been about a week or two since the tranny oil was replaced.
I do not use the van that much but when I do I still have the noise when I start the car.
Yesturday I started the van and heard the noise. I drove about 10 miles to a store and heard the noise the whole time.
when I started the van again to go home I didnt hear the noise too much just faintly.
Im not sure if it my imagination but I think the van is shifting funny once in a while and I think it might have slip too.

Suggest screen cleaning. You're a ripe candidate for clogged screens, which restricts ATF flow causing the noise you describe plus clutch abrasion and problematic shifts.

Shark,

Any progress in your whinning/whirring noise? I, too, has whirring/whinning but only on the 3rd gear when I push the gas pedal for acceleration. But gone when the speed is stable and constant. It's not as bad though but I can hear even if the doors are close. My transmission shifting is still good. I read a lot on this forum but could not find any answer. I've added new aftermarket cooler and Magnefine filter and also did drain and fill new Honda Z1 transmission fluid 4X but it did help to silent the whiining/whirring noise.

Its still there. I hear it most when I first start the car and drive after the first start. It also shifts odd when I shift from P to D.
After the car warms up and I turn it off and start up again the noise is about 75% gone.
Im pretty sure its the tranny but since this has become my secondary car I am not going to do anything about it untill it complety fails.
