Amsoil it will be ... and yes, I already installed a tranny cooler as stated in an earlier post :)

Admittedly, the cooler will reduce some of the strain on the fluid, but I think that even with a cooler, temps right at the friction points (clutches, gears) would spike under load, so better oil is still desirable.

I also did an amsoil drain/fill and added a cooler. The other thing I'd recommend is changing out the filter or adding a better one, because new fluid loosens up gunk and gunk is what kills trannies.

You'll often see that neglected trannies last a long time, and failure often follows a fluid change! Change that filter and get the gunk out.

jondotcom, how many miles have you logged so far with Amsoil?

Enquiring minds (or is it "inquiring") want to know!

I'm making the switch to Valvoline MaxLife myself on my 2003, while sticking with ATF-Z1 on my wife's 2002 for a comparison test. Both use Lubegard as well.

Best regards, OF

Hi folks,

I'm new to forum, I have recently purchased a 05' Honda Odyssey Ex-L with 115k miles. I don't have any transmission problem at the moment but looking to be proactive and considering switching Trans fluid to AMSOIL. I am confused about the method which to introduce new fluid to transmission...3x fill and drain....fluid exchange? Do you proceed to do fill and drain over a specific time period or all in one occasion? For fluid exchange...whats proper procedure?

Thanks

4 drain and fills will get you around 90% new fluid. Not sure why so many come up with the 3x instead of the Honda 4x.
Most here recommend that you put some miles on between drain and fills, (hundreds to thousands) so that the new fluid , with fresh cleaning additives, will gradually remove varnish, etc with each drain and fill.
On you Ody, doing a single drain and fill requires 3.3 qts (out of 8.5 qts total) will give you aprox 39% new fluid.

I believe I know the answer to this one.

The Honda service manual (as you know) calls for a 4x drain-and-fill. However, most of us out here do not have access to that service manual. Far more accessible to average Joes doing internet searches is TSB 16-060 (Judder from the Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch) and the related follow-up TSBs where Honda specifies doing a 3x drain-and-fill and calls it the "ATF flush procedure".

When you combine this with the fact that doing a triple drain-and-fill exchanges about 85% of the ATF and a quadruple drain-and-fill only increases that to about 92%, I think most people conclude that the 3x drain-and-fill is good enough (which in most cases it is) and it becomes their rule of thumb.

This makes a lot of sense, the 4th drain-and-fill is extremely costly given how little old ATF is left...
