just wondering what oil all of you are running in your high mileage ody. I am a new owner of an 01 with 200K on it. I want my engine to last.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Most of the companies make "high mileage" oils these days which are supposed to be beneficial in engines such as yours.

I have a 1999 EX with 190,000 miles. I have run Synthetic Mobil1 5w-30 at 5000 - 8000 mile intervals for most of the oil changes. It uses no oil and leaks no oil.

I have also had some changes with non-synthetic 5w-30, and currently have Motorcraft 5w-20 in the van. I have read the Motorcraft is a semi-synthetic to obtain the 5w-20 rating. I notice no mileage / performance / noise difference with the 5w-20 vs. 5w-30.

For my next change, I will either use the 5w-20, or go back to Mobil1 or synthetic Pennzoil 5w-30 in April as warm weather in Texas starts early in the year.

If there are no leaks, and it is using no oil, I do not believe the high-mileage (or synthetic) oil would be necessary. I use synthetic because of the hot summers here.

It's a bit cooler where you are, but I would still use 5w-30 Mobil-1 for your Ody.

For my hi-mileage fleet:
140k on 2001 Ody -- 5w-30 Mobil-1 at 7500 intervals
135k on 1995 Taco -- 5w-30 Mobil-1 at 5000 intervals
230k on 1991 Corolla -- 10w-30 Castrol GTX at 3333 intervals

All engines are tight and strong. No leaks, no smoke, no cosumption between changes.

Is it okay to switch to synthetic

I have a 2000 EX and ever since it hit the 75,000 mile mark, I switched over to Castrol 5W30 High Mileage oil. I've been doing the oil changes at Wal-Mart and right now the high mileage oil change costs around $40 which is pretty steep I think. I am contemplating switching to Mobil1 5W-30 Extended Performance Oil to extend my oil change interval (currently I do change at 3750 miles). I also plan to buy the oil myself and take it to the dealer to do the oil change (dealer charges $18 to do it).

My question is whether I will have oil leaks switching to synthetic oil, since I have around 93K miles on my car and have ever used synthetic oil in it.

Thanks.

No. - The additive package to an oil like Mobil1 prevents shrinkage or swelling of engine seals resulting in oil leakage. Some of what you ask is a result of yester-year technology and a little urban-legend.

Any spec'd 5w30 and filter is all you need for a 200Kmi Ody. No oil is going to put life back on that drivetrain or prevent problems. You could even run a 5w20 and that engine will continue to hum along like it always has.

So far I've been running dino oil in my 99 Odyssey. I put in whatever's on sale at the time. No problems and the engine's as tight as a drum. I have contemplated using synthetic, but being a cheap bast*ge, I mean frugal, I haven't brought myself to pay the synthetic price. I believe it's more important to change the oil regularly than use a high tech synthetic oil.
