There is no VCM "issue" on the 5th gen odyssey. No VCM issues have been reported or experienced, just people still shell shocked from the previous generation issues.
Has there been sufficient time? My understanding was problems resulting from VCM only show up at high mileage.

I'll keep this going. On my 2018 I get better gas mileage with the VCM defeat, about .5-1.0 mpg on a 186 mile combined circuit of highway, and secondary roads - Central PA to Ocean City MD and back. First 25k miles with VCM, last couple years without. I know this is contrary to what people have reported with the VCM defeat installed...

Two different drivers to boot, neither have a particularly light foot. We get a very consistent 29.5-31 which is up over the 28-29 with VCM.

Throttle response still feels like it clogs the EGR port like my 1999, but I do not feel like researching that or taking it apart to look at it.

We do love the car except for the middle seats are a crime, and somehow there is slightly less front leg room than the 1999.

I find it interesting that you can get 29 MPG in an Odyssey. On my '12 the best I have ever gotten on a tank of gas is 24.5 mpg. On long highway trips I find I drive between 75 and 85. Unless the conditions deteriorate, I can't drive too much slower on highways.

You're not the only one. There have been probably at least a couple others reporting the same thing.

I wonder if the reduced engine braking when coasting with VCM disabling has people needing to step on the gas less compared to when VCM is enabled and the vehicle slows down faster while coasting.

If the VCM-3 was a problem we could just link to the many problems people are reporting but we cannot like the previous generations. Since it was out even longer in the Acura line it would have shown up by now even if at a reduced occurrence but it does not seem to be. That tells me Honda fixed the issue or certainly reduced it's occurrence no matter what others say. Sure you can muzzle the latest generation, but it seems legacy issues are clouding judgement on the current generation without much supporting documentation.

btw - we struggle getting >27 in our 2019. Two adults, two kids.

In my Infiniti I get 33-34 (or I *did prior to buying bonehead performance tires and lost 20%... ah well).

But still get 480-515 miles in a tank vs. 280-350 in the Odyssey.

The Ody tank is 19.5 gallons I believe so at 25 mpg should should get around 400 miles per tank with a few gal to spare.

You keep saying this about the VCM in the 5th Gen but where is the proof that it causes an issue?
You have a 2006 so the new VCM isn't like yours.
"Conceptually flawed" so in theory it could cause issues but doesn't? Just because the older VCM did doesn't mean this one does.
VCM-3 has been out since 2015 and has no reported issues, I would say an 8 year run would start showing issues by now.
Fix the vacuum issue? I think they addressed that in VCM-3...
"VCM eliminates “pumping losses” in the deactivated cylinders. By keeping the valves closed in the cylinder to stop fuel supply, it also prevents air in-and-out to that cylinder. This eliminates pumping loss—the air resistance incurred when the pistons pump intake air and exhaust gases through the cylinder—which is the largest source of resistance in engine operation at low loads. This is the primary reason why deactivating the cylinders contributes to improved fuel economy. 2) Reducing pumping losses in active cylinders. In 3- cylinder operation, the throttle is open wider. This makes inhalation of intake air easier for the active cylinders, reducing pumping losses for improved fuel economy."
We get it, you hate the 5th gen and nobody should ever buy one.
My 2016 honda odyssey was ruined by the VCM and I’m still salty about it. I loved that van.
