Now the rest of the story... I had the power steering (3rd one) replaced under warranty last week. It seems my 2006 requires one every 30k miles. The next one will be on me. The fluid is not as clear as I would like. I was going to do a flush of the fluid once since everything is new. I was thinking of adding a Cardone filter as extra insurance. The $15 filter may protect the $150 pump.

The Cardone filter is 200 micron with a magnet in line. I was wondering what the level of filtration that comes with the stock reservoir. Has anyone seen it?

The PS reservoir may be the reason you are on your 3rd PS pump. There is a TSB specifically on the defective PS reservoir starving the pump resulting in failure. Change the reservoir.

I already have the improved reservoir and I have had it for a while. (At least one pump's worth.) The dealer installed it per the TSB. I was wondering what the level of filtration is on this part.

I have ordered a second filter just to be redundant. It has a magnet and a filter.

Deive Safe,

Joe

You may have a problem with your steering rack. It could be bad and contaminating the PS fluid, thus causing a premature failure in the PS Pump. You may want to have that checked before you burn through another PS Pump

We just had the pump and reservoir replaced last night. First thing I noticed was how loose the red cap is. I am sure if I hit a big enough bump that sucker is popping right off.

I replaced my pump reservoir last year and ordered a new cap with it. Even though the part# is the same for the old and new cap, there is definitely a size difference between the two.

I did email the service department. They said, oh yeah the cap does not come with the new reservoir. it's $1.35, we have them here. Um, I really would have been happy to pay the $1.35 when I was there. I should read more posts here and I guess I would have known to do that :)

Just my 2 cents:

I don't know the level of filtration that the reservoirs have, but I'm just wondering if you are aware of the bottom line issue with the old reservoirs: The level of filtration was too high meaning that the filter got plugged up with debris and thus starved the pump of fluid. I don't know that adding another filter is the best idea. Either it will filter better than the new reservoir and introduce the same problem that the original reservoir caused or filter less than the new reservoir and you will have gained nothing.

Am I thinking about this correctly?

Last weekend I replaced my PS fluid and reservoir. I cut the reservoir in half to see what the screen looked like. Above is a photo. This is with well over 100k miles on it. There was more debris in the fluid that I purged from the lines and rack. The particles from the lines and rack were larger on average.

After seeing what was in my filter, I agree with the above statement that a filter any finer could certainly clog and cause flow problems.

Just bought a 2005 Odyssey that has the same symptoms (low power assist at low speed, hard turning). The Honda dealer told me that the reason the old reservoir was clogging was because the pump was failing (subject to warranty extension 11-039, now long expired). They said to replace the PS pump & reservoir & due a fluid flush.
What has been the experience of Ody owners? Should I consider ordering a pump too ($340) + reservoir / cap.. ???
I did a fluid flush last night before I learned of the reservoir issue, effort is much better, but not what I'd call great. I used a vacuum pump to suck from the reservoir and went through cycles of turning the steering full left, right, center until fluid was much clearer.. too about 4 bottles. So, I may have sucked some of the crap from the bottom of the reservoir helping a bit.
So, now am wondering if I should continue w/ just a new updated reservoir or if what the Honda dealer says is correct and plan on doing the pump before it fails further, plugs the new reservoir or worse affects the steering rack w/ debris?

If it's never had any previous work done to the PS system then I'd definitely put a new pump on, along with a reservoir and a flush. The original pumps were junk. I don't know how to tell if the aftermarket pumps are "upgraded" pumps that the TSB refers to. If you get a new pump that has A03 on the end of the part number you should be good.

Thanks John,

I still have the original ps pump just replaced with new reservoir, leaky high pressure hose an the revised Oring in the inlet of the ps pump last autumn.Still works great. Try just the new reservoir $20. Easy replacement.05 ody 180k

While I agree it may only need a reservoir and new fluid, if the pump just happens to be wearing and putting metal or debris in the system then you risk having to replace the pump AND the steering rack. The pumps aren't cheap but neither are the racks.

IF looking at Honda Parts... what's the difference betweent the two #2's below:
2) Pump Sub-Assy, Power Steering 56110-RGL-A03 $330 (no core charge)
2) P/S Pump Kit 06561-RGL-305RM $118 (+$50 core charge)

Is the "kit" a rebuild kit or a pump similar to what you'd buy at Napa, O'Reiley, Advance Auto, etc. ?

Well their remanufactured part only lasted 20k miles on my van. Now they expect me to replace it again.
I thought in another post you said your part number ended in "A02." The A02 is not a rebuilt/reman pump. It was just the original part number failed pump.
