Getting ready to put new tires on my '99 Ody.

I plan to go with the Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds.

Stock size is 215/65/R16.

The current tires (Michelin Symmetry's) are 225/60R16.

Which size should I go with on the new ones? Please vote!

Went thru the size question with my '01. Last 3 sets of tires have been Symmetry 225/60R16.

I went wider too at 225/60/R16 Michelin Hydroedge FWIW.

Sears put the 225/60's on for us Friday...took them about five hours to get it in and done after they told my wife it would be a couple of hours...she complained about the extremely long wait so they knocked $68 bucks off.

We just returned from a quick weekend trip (almost all intestate/highway) riding on these tires. So far, I am quite happy.

We filled up before we left, then two fillups during the trip, and a third when we got back. Total distance traveled was 924 miles using 37.407 gallons for 24.7MPG on the trip. Not bad for a van with just under 132k miles!

Second on 235/60-R16. But not with Sears tires :D

We've had these about three months now, and I am quite pleased with them.

My wife drives the van much more than I do, and she is quite happy with the handling. She was disappointed that they are not any quieter than the Symmetries.

Overall, I'd buy these again. Besides, the tread LOOKS really COOL! :D

Acura TL 17/8 rub?

We have had Michelin X Radials in 225/60/16 for a few years (30K miles). Van runs very smooth and quiet with these tires. Rims are getting worn looking.

We have been looking at factory takeoff Acura TL rims 17x8 and adding 225/55/17 tires. Will these cause any rubbing in turns or in the back on the fender when loaded?

235/60s are a very good choice, well proven by members of this group.

Go 235/60-16. I had that on our second set of tires for the Ody.
You won't regret it.
Will LX 2000 stell rims fit this 235 tires?

Yes, we drove our '01 LX many miles on 235/60-16s.

235-60-16

Hydroedge with 235-60-16.....60,000 miles and still going strong.

PSI 39-40.

Tires look a little worn, but still good. Recently had to replace 1 at Costco becuase of a nail in the sidewall and I got a 40% credit on the tire. Not bad at all.

What's the advantage of using a different width?

What's the disadvantage? More costly?

Btw, EPIC thread-reivival heh? :).

The wider tire usually provides more of a contact patch to increase grip (in good weather). They are (usually) more costly, heavier and decreased MPG.

The two main advantages the narrower tire has is increased MPG (albeit relatively minor given the same overall tire diameter) and will cut through snow better.

3 years later... (2001 EX)

Since others will trip across odyclub looking for answers to using 235/60R16 instead of the 215/65R16 (99-03?), the question I had is why do some think the wider tire is better? At this point I still don't know. But I'm buying tires today so here's what I know:

- the 235/60R16 is 0.4" wider than the 215/65R16 ...so, is wider better? Does .4" make much difference at all?
- 215/65R16 and 235/60R16 have almost identical overall diameter (27" vs 27.1")
- the 225/60R16 in comparison is ~0.5" smaller dia (26.6"), and sidewall is 0.2" shorter

- I'm using the tire size calculator at Tire Size Calculator
- I've looked at Michelin Defenders and a few others but 235/60R16's aren't stocked and I can't wait, so...
- I may settle on a set of General EverTrek RTX (in stock), $120 on sale.

- the reality of doing work on a car is unless you plan well ahead you will pay more, or not get what you want.

cheers

I've had 235/60-16 tires on my 2003 for a short while. The ride was actually really nice, except for this one messed-up stretch of road on the way to work that made some of the weirdest noises I've ever heard between a tire and the road surface. Except for that one 400-yard long noisy area, they were fine (can't remember what they were....Comfortred or Hydroedge).

I switched to 225/60-16 Michelin Primacy's, and these were the cat's meow. Per the thread's title, my vote is for 225/60-16 instead of 215/65-16 (which were the original equipment on my 2001 EX).

Update: Well, after a 1500 mile trip up north and back I have to say I'm really happy with the new tires (General EverTreks 235/60R16). Noticeable bump up in ride quality, handling. Quiet too; so much so that I notice the wind noise more (need to look into sound-proofing). As far as looks go, the tires seem to fill the wheel well better; it's only .4" wider so maybe just my wishful thinking; anyway, I always felt the original tires looked too small for the body and it definitely looks better now.

Next is a new set of springs in the back. It's a bit saggy with a full load. Might look into air bags.
